Command Mission and History

To support and promote LAMPS Squadrons in order to provide Combat-Ready Detachments to fleet CINC's

Commander, Helicopter Anti-Submarine Light Wing, U.S. Atlantic Fleet (COMHSLWINGLANT) was established in March 1985 at Naval Station Mayport, FL to exercise operational and administrative control of five Atlantic Fleet Light Airborne Multi-Purpose Systems (LAMPS) MK III squadrons (HSL) and a support detachment in Sigonella Sicily. COMHSLWINGLANT is responsible for all aspects of training, readiness and material support of the units assigned when shore based and as appropriate when they are deployed.

COMHSLWINGLANT is composed of over 270 pilots, 1250 sailors, and 75 SH-60B "Seahawk" helicopters. The SH-60B is the air component of the LAMPS MK III weapons system, integrated with specifically configured surface combatants including, Oliver hazard Perry (FFG-7) class guided-missile frigates, Spruance (DD-963) class destroyers, Ticonderoga (CG-47) class guided-missile cruisers, and Arleigh Burke (DDG-51 Flight IIA) class guided missile destroyers. LAMPS MK III aircraft and crews have exceeded all Fleet requirements since their first deployment in 1984. The primary missions of LAMPS MK III include antisurface and antisubmarine warfare. Secondary missions include electronic warfare and command, control and communications as well as traditional helicopter roles of search and rescue and logistics.

In July, 1992, COMHSLWINGLANT absorbed the operational and administrative functions of COMHSLWING ONE whose responsibilities included oversight of four Atlantic Fleet LAMPS MK I (SH-2F) squadrons homeported in Norfolk, VA and Mayport, FL. These squadrons were subsequently disestablished and COMHSLWINGLANT responsibilities reverted to the five LAMPS MK III squadrons located at Naval Station Mayport, FL.
